Local sources reported today that unidentified gunmen launched an attack on several Russian military checkpoints around the Hmeimim Air Base in the western Latakia countryside.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the area surrounding the Hmeimim Air Base is witnessing unprecedented security tensions following the attack, indicating that the attacking group is likely affiliated with armed factions allied with the Damascus government.
The Observatory added that information had been received about the downing of a drone flying in the area, amid intermittent clashes and heavy gunfire that continues to be heard from time to time.
There has been no official information about the extent of the losses or the party responsible for the attack.
It should be noted that Hmeimim Air Base is a strategic military base for Russian forces in Syria.
