Female journalists in North and East Syria have organized under the Women's Media Union (YRJ), established on June 28, 2020, as the first organization for women journalists. The union plays an active role in the struggle to convey the truth in the region, basing its work and activities on the model of a democratic nation and women's freedom.

Over 500 female journalists have joined the Women's Media Union, which plays a significant role in guiding media work, protecting, and advocating for the rights of female journalists in the region.

Arin Sweid, the spokesperson for the Women's Media Union (YRJ), spoke to ANHA Agency on the occasion of the union’s fifth anniversary. She highlighted the importance of establishing the Women's Media Union and the responsibilities it has undertaken. She noted that the union has fulfilled its duties under the most challenging circumstances and described the past year as eventful and successful in discussing and documenting issues related to women, their perspectives, and holding forums.

Sweid explained that they met with many female journalists, both in North and East Syria and across Syria in general. She shed light on the union's activities, saying: "There has been an increase in requests from female journalists to join the union. We held meetings with international organizations and the United Nations to introduce the union and condemn the violations faced by female journalists in the region. We provided them with statistics and reports on these crimes. We also held numerous meetings with female journalists to strengthen relationships, exchange experiences, and identify the challenges they face in their communities and institutions."

"We Follow Women's Issues at All Levels"

During her speech, Arin Sweid addressed the challenges and obstacles facing their work, noting that female journalists encounter significant barriers in accessing information related to women's issues and cases of violence. She continued, saying: "When we talk about the killing of women, we are talking about both physical and psychological murders, as we address the culture of misogyny at every opportunity."

Sweid emphasized the union's commitment to strengthening and developing itself and holding its own conference. She also extended congratulations on the fifth anniversary of the union’s establishment, stating that they will continue their struggle and work with deeper expertise, as there is a greater need than ever to build an institution and body for women.

Sweid concluded her remarks by noting plans to hold a Women's Media Union conference in the coming period to make the union stronger and larger.
