The Yazidi organization "Yazda" issued a statement regarding the accused, Sonia Mejri, charged with committing acts of genocide against Yazidis in Syria. The statement read:

“In an unprecedented decision, the French Supreme Court has ruled that Sonia Mejri may face charges of committing genocide. She is accused of committing crimes against a teenage Yazidi girl who was held captive in the home of Sonia and her husband, a member of ISIS, in Syria in 2015.

The Yazidi girl was enslaved and subjected to violence and abuse. The ruling overturns a previous decision by a lower court that had dismissed the genocide charge. The court affirmed that an individual can be prosecuted for genocide even if the actions were directed at only one member of the group, as long as the group itself was targeted as part of a coordinated plan aiming to destroy it in whole or in part.

This decision aligns France with international legal standards and represents an important step toward achieving justice.

The case will now return to a newly formed chamber, which will decide whether Sonia Mejri will be tried for involvement in genocide, in addition to charges related to terrorism and crimes against humanity.”
