The accused, Osama Krayem, is charged with participating in the brutal killing of Muath al-Kasasbeh, who was burned alive in Syria.

This is the first trial of a suspect in the killing of the Jordanian pilot, an act of extreme brutality that sparked global outrage in 2015, according to the Swedish Prosecution Authority.

Prosecutor Reena Devgun stated at the start of the trial in Stockholm:

“Osama Krayem, in coordination and agreement with other ISIS members, killed Muath al-Kasasbeh. In this context, Krayem, wearing a uniform and carrying a weapon, guarded the victim and escorted him to the metal cage where he was later held. Then, one of the perpetrators set fire to Muath al-Kasasbeh, who had no means to defend himself or call for help.”

In Jordan, the pilot’s father, Safi al-Kasasbeh, told AFP, “We hope this criminal receives the harshest punishment. This is what we hope for from a respected and fair legal system.”

Osama Krayem, a 32-year-old Swedish national, has been formally charged with “aggravated war crimes and acts of terrorism.”
