This morning’s newspapers highlighted Oman’s role in reviving negotiations between Washington and Tehran, and the fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel, against the backdrop of growing internal NATO conflict over the decision to raise defense spending from 2% to 5% of GDP.
Oman’s active role in reviving negotiations between Washington and Tehran
Al-Arab, a London-based newspaper, wrote about Oman’s role in the negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, noting that regional and international attention is turning to the Sultanate of Oman to revive the stalled negotiations and to address concerns about the seriousness of Muscat’s efforts and its ability to rebuild trust between Washington and Tehran after the recent war.
Observers believe that the Sultanate’s role as a neutral mediator has not prevented it from expressing political stances in line with its diplomatic doctrine, advocating for the foundations of security, peace, and dialogue among states and peoples, promoting international law, and rejecting violence and hatred.
The paper added: “These observers also note that the strength of Oman’s diplomatic engagement has enhanced appreciation for its strategic geopolitical position in securing international navigation routes and in safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz from the fallout of the open confrontation between Iran and Israel, especially following the direct U.S. intervention in bombing Iranian nuclear facilities.”
When a ceasefire prolongs the war
Asharq Al-Awsat reported on the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran, stating that the Iranian Supreme National Security Council announced that Iran “forced Israel into a unilateral ceasefire” following the latest 12-day round of military escalation. The paper added that Tehran views the imposed ceasefire as a result of its military and political resilience, and that it remains “on high alert for any potential new escalation.”
According to the paper, the Iranian announcement came after a direct intervention by the U.S. President Donald Trump, who boasted of his “success in imposing a comprehensive truce,” claiming it marked “the end of Iran’s nuclear program forever.”
The paper affirmed that these statements come amid conflicting narratives about who emerged victorious from this round. Israel insists it achieved strategic goals by striking more than 600 targets inside Iran, while Tehran promotes a narrative of resilience and propaganda victory, relying on Western media sources and academic voices that support its perspective.
